History

In March of 1980, First Baptist Church of Bend, Oregon voted to start a second Conservative Baptist church because of the growth and over-crowding taking place.  Larry McCracken, head of CB Northwest (Northwest Conservative Baptist Association), met with the families that would be starting this new church in Bend. Until a more definite name could be decided upon, the group was called the “Satellite Fellowship” and met in homes.

In May of 1980, the group began holding morning and evening services at Jewell School with approximately 40 people in attendance and invited speakers. The group voted in June to change the name “Satellite Fellowship” to “Eastmont Church” meaning “east of the mountains.” Andy Cochran began as the first pastor in July.

The church moved to the facilities of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in November and began making plans for their own facility. The first Annual Business meeting for Eastmont Church with the election of church officers was held in February of 1981. Pastor Andy baptized eight people at the first baptismal service on March 29, 1981.

A land-search committee was formed to search for property to build a church. A sales agreement was signed in April, 1982 for seven acres on the corner of Neff and Eagle Roads. The finances needed to start the construction became available completely through the giving of members and friends of Eastmont. Jim Barrett and Al Levage, Bend architects who were new to Eastmont, volunteered to design the initial building. Construction of the building began under the leadership of Dennis Samples and was completed in June of 1983. The facility was formally dedicated September 25, 1983.

Pastor Cochran left Eastmont in the fall of 1984 to begin a new ministry in Antioch, California. A search committee was formed to look for a new pastor. In the interim, John Lawrence, a professor from Multnomah School of the Bible came to help through the time of transition without a pastor.

John Lodwick began his ministry as the new pastor of Eastmont Church in July of 1985.

As Eastmont continued to grow, the need to accommodate the growth was evident. An “overflow room” with a closed circuit television was used for one year. In 1987, two Sunday morning services began. The congregation and new building committee began work on adding another building-the Family Center. This building was also completed debt free in 1991.

Once again Eastmont Church found itself growing, and the decision was made to hold Church services in the Family Center so the congregation could all worship together. This change took place in the summer of 1996 and because of continued growth, plans were implemented to expand to two morning services. Funds were prayerfully requested and provided for remodeling to improve the acoustics and the atmosphere of the Family Center for worship.

In 1998, another broader-based, new facilities ministry was initiated. A new sanctuary will be built between the two existing buildings (the Family Center and the Administrative Center) in the future. Major expansion was started on the Family Center in the fall of 2000 with expanded narthex, childcare areas and classrooms. The original church building (which is now the Administrative Center) will be renovated to accommodate the expanded administrative needs of the church.
